Laid Back Larry

by Katie Mason

With every month that passes my excitement and anticipation to ride Larry grows. Last month I talked about our work with ropes. This month I will fill you in on how our ground driving went. Larry has packed a snaffle around for a while now. His excitement is uncanny when I walk out of the tack room with his snaffle. He takes it effortlessly and holds it naturally, and he doesn't play with it.

Call Him Consistent

by Kate Sanchez

Consistency is key. Ask any coach, teacher, or boss what makes the best athlete, student, or employee and it’s fair to say consistency is one of the top attributes. Phillip Ralls agrees. Call Me Mitch, a 2011 bay roan stallion that’s been in Ralls’ program since the trainer bought him for owner Estelle Rotblat as a yearling, is extremely talented, jaw-droppingly pretty, but most of all, has a rock-solid consistency about him every time Ralls swings a leg over his back. He’s what every trainer dreams of.

True perfection in the show pen is only really achieved through the pairing of a talented horse and a trainer who believes in that animal. In this case, Sonita Lena Rey didn’t come into Corey Cushing’s barn until late in his five-year-old year, but the 2011 sorrel gelding made an instant impression, one that has certainly impacted Cushing’s career.
